Building the bulk of a 1,600 MW thermal power plant in Chandrapura, Jharkhand, was given the green light by infrastructure giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) on October 7th. Damodar Valley Corporation and Coal India are collaborating on the project's development.

After the project obtains all necessary environmental permits and the Limited Notice to Proceed period is over, the notice to proceed will be issued by DVC CIL Power Pvt Ltd (DVCCIL), a joint venture between Damodar Valley Corporation and Coal India Ltd.

Offerings of Jharkhand Thermal Plant

Two ultra-supercritical power units, each with 800 MW of output, will make up the project. Important pieces of machinery like boilers, steam turbines, generators, and electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) will be designed, manufactured, supplied, installed, tested, and commissioned by L&T. The firm will also be responsible for any related mechanical, electrical, control, or civil works. Power and low-carbon process solutions are offered by L&T Energy CarbonLite Solutions, a division of L&T.

The Chandrapura project, with its 1,600 MW installed capacity, will greatly augment the nation's expanding ability to generate power. As India's energy mix changes, this project shows that high-efficiency thermal power generation will still play a part. Providing consistent baseload power while enhancing efficiency and environmental performance is a key role that innovative thermal technologies may play in meeting India's ever-increasing electricity demand.

L&T’s Recent Market Performance

L&T received orders totalling INR 1.08 lakh crore for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2026 (Q1 FY27). This resulted in a 14% year-over-year increase, with notable order wins recorded in a variety of industries, including heavy engineering, offshore wind, transportation infrastructure, ferrous metals, and residential and commercial structures. With an increase of 5% from the order book as of March 31, 2026, the Group's consolidated order book reached INR 7.79 lakh crore as of June 30, 2026.

Of the whole order book, 52% were foreign orders. The project, which is being constructed by DVC CIL Power Private Ltd, further solidifies L&T's partnership with prominent public-sector power providers, according to T. Madhava Das, Senior Executive Vise President & Whole-time Director—Energy Hydrocarbon at L&T. Meeting the country's increasing power demands will also be significantly easier with cooperation. L&T is excited to lend a hand in seeing this crucial project through to completion, Das added.

L&T Partners With Together AI

Vyoma.AI, L&T's data centre division, said that it had acquired an Nvidia B300 AI factory—the biggest single-cluster AI infrastructure in India—for the benefit of a US-based startup called Together AI. Approximate value of the order: INR 10,000–15,000 crore.

Located in Vyoma's data centre complex in Chennai, the AI factory will soon be able to power an AI-native cloud platform that can handle training, fine-tuning, and large-scale inferencing workloads. The AI factory can be expanded in the future thanks to the gigawatt-scale AI infrastructure site at the Chennai data centre. Phase 1 is planned for 250 MW, and the power infrastructure is ready for 150 MVA. As a provider of integrated AI computing capabilities, L&T sees this order as a major milestone beyond traditional data center infrastructure.
