As part of its ambition to attain three times growth in the next four to five years, Luminous Power Technologies has announced plans to invest INR 2,000 crore over the course of five years. Achieving operational excellence, growing the solar industry, bolstering the inverter and battery business, and owning technology from a software and hardware standpoint are the four cornerstones of the company's growth strategy.

The transition from a power backup provider to an energy solutions provider was detailed by Vivek Abrol, managing director and chief executive officer. This highlights the fact that the investment is in line with changes in technology. Furthermore, their solar product line will be able to meet the increasing demand for lithium-ion batteries thanks to this investment.

Expansion Plans of Luminous

In Gopalpur, Odisha, Luminous is setting up a solar cell manufacturing facility with a capacity of 1.2 GW. Its PV module factory in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, would get raw materials from this new project. The first batch is anticipated to be produced by the facility in May 2027. As part of its all-encompassing solar and energy storage strategy, the business is also establishing a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and energy storage system in Angul, Odisha.

Abrol claims that, at first, the business is planning to concentrate on producing cells in-house. So, before reevaluating the feasibility of build vs. buy choices, the facility needs to be operationally viable with module manufacturing. In order to enhance cost-to-market and time-to-market, the business intends to scale through tolling-based methods with vendor partners after it surpasses its 1.2 GW capacity.

The 500 MWh lithium-ion battery manufacturing machine, which Luminous put into operation in January at Baddi, Solan, accommodates both stationary BESS modules and standalone battery packs. With a system-level scalability of up to 112 kWh, the facility is capable of producing individual packs ranging from 1.2 kWh to 16 kWh. The business is investigating sodium and other alternative chemistries to lithium-ion cells in order to construct battery packs. It is also studying various uses, total cost of ownership, and safety considerations in order to identify the best chemistry to use in various contexts.

Luminous New Business Strategies

Luminous now maintains production facilities in a number of different places, including the following: Haridwar, Uttarakhand; Hosur, Tamil Nadu; and Gagret, Himachal Pradesh. The ConnectX app allows users to see data from over 100,000 linked houses, allowing them to track solar power output, consumption, battery life, and grid export. The importance of hybrid inverters will grow as governmental frameworks change and battery solutions become more affordable, according to Abrol.

In the meanwhile, the firm plans to fortify its distribution and system-integrator network to tackle the market more quickly and scalability. Finding a reliable provider of solar panels and inverters can be a daunting task for consumers. Luminous aims to fill this void by focusing on several aspects of the solar solution. Applications within homes and BESS solutions for small C&I applications will be addressed by the company, according to Abrol. Although lead-acid has been an effective and widely used chemistry in India's power backup sector, this has the potential to supplant DG systems.
