Meta and Reliance Join Forces on AI-Enabled Data Center Project in India
Meta Platforms is constructing its first AI-ready data centre complex in India in collaboration with Reliance Industries. In Jamnagar, Gujarat, at Reliance's hyperscale facility, the Facebook parent company will rent data centre capacity of 168 megawatts, with the potential to expand even further.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and co-founder of Meta, expressed his company's pride in partnering with Reliance to construct India's first AI-enabled datacenter. In addition to Meta's long-term investment in India's economy and the ability to extend its AI infrastructure globally, this world-class facility in Jamnagar will help with both, according to Zuckerberg.
Renewable Energy the Key Driver of Reliance-Meta Data Centre
Meta will cover the cost of powering the facility with renewable energy and cooling it with desalinated seawater. With its ambitious underwater cable network Project Waterworth, which is supposedly the longest subsea system in the world, the global social media and AI powerhouse would also link Jamnagar. Meta has formed distinct partnerships with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy, two of India's most prominent renewable energy suppliers. According to a blog post made by the corporation on 10 June, this agreement will result in roughly 1 gigawatt of renewable energy.
CleanMax plans to increase the total capacity to more than 900 MW by constructing 837 MW of additional solar and wind projects in the Indian states of Rajasthan and Karnataka. At the same time, Fourth Partner Energy would build 88 MW of new wind and solar farms in the Indian states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. This collaboration with Meta signifies a watershed moment for India's digital infrastructure, according to Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited. The fact that Meta, a world-renowned technology company, is constructing India's first AI data centre to meet their specific needs shows that India is prepared to lead the charge in the AI revolution, he continued.

Meta Long Standing Partnership with Reliance
In 2020, Meta began its long-term collaboration with Reliance by investing $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, acquiring a 9.98% stake. Ever since, the two CEOs have worked together on a number of projects. The most recent of these projects is the artificial intelligence (AI) joint venture Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Limited (REIL). In REIL, both the firms have invested a combined total of INR 855 crore.
In an effort to build the necessary infrastructure for artificial intelligence, Ambani, CEO of Reliance Industries, plans to spend $110 billion (INR 10 lakh crore) over the next seven years. This will help bring "India to the intelligence era". By 2035, Adani Enterprises intends to have invested $100 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure. With the advent of regional data protection regulations and the accompanying surge in demand for digital infrastructure, the data centre business in India has seen a slew of new investments, coinciding with the Meta partnership.
