Nvidia Expands AI Empire With $12.9 Billion Hugging Face Acquisition
Nvidia to buy AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion as chip giant makes huge expansion into AI software and open source Tech. The deal will provide Hugging Face more resources, infrastructure and worldwide reach while keeping its open platform.
Nvidia has agreed to acquire open-source artificial intelligence technology Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. The move comes as the chipmaker advances up the stack and beyond hardware. On September 3, Nvidia chief Jensen Huang said in a blog post that the transaction will allow Hugging Face to stay an open platform for the broader AI industry. Together, Huang said, Nvidia will scale Hugging Face’s platform, fortify its infrastructure and provide access to AI for developers and institutions globally.
Why Hugging Face Opted to Strike Deal with Nvidia?
A few weeks after approaching Huang about a merger, Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue informed a media house that the two companies had successfully closed the deal. Hugging Face, and open-source AI more generally, he said, reached a tipping point during the summer when the company realised it. In addition, he brought up the fact that the company now required more—more people, more money, and greater exposure.
The reason Delangue approached Nvidia first, he added, was because the company was "a perfect home" for his business. He also mentioned that talks moved quickly to finalise the deal. Both companies are reportedly in talks to reach an agreement, as reported by StartupTalky on August 27. After purchasing assets from chipmaker Groq for $20 billion in December, this deal becomes Nvidia's second largest on record. Before that, in 2019, it had acquired Israeli chipmaker Mellanox for over $7 billion, its biggest acquisition to that point.
The generative AI explosion couldn't have happened without Nvidia's graphics processing units, which have become the most valuable corporation in the world. Nvidia keeps proving it's more than just a chip manufacturer with Hugging Face, a huge wager on a popular AI platform.
Specifics of the Deal
Hugging Face investors will receive around $11.9 billion from Nvidia, and new hires can receive stock-based incentives of up to $1 billion, according to the agreement. Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI, three of Nvidia's most important clients, are developing their own processors as a result of the acquisition, which might help Nvidia increase its footprint in artificial intelligence software. When compared to AI systems owned by a single corporation, open-source models allow individuals to download and modify the models.
Businesses, researchers, and developers will have easier access to the technology, according to proponents of the method. In a market where competition is heating up, the acquisition would also provide Nvidia with access to a massive AI developer community. Hugging Face, developed by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, three French entrepreneurs, offers data sets, development environments, and cloud services for artificial intelligence applications. Amazon, AMD, and Intel are among the investors that support Hugging Face.
