Nvidia to Buy Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion in Major AI Acquisition

For $12.9 billion, Nvidia will acquire the open-source Hugging Face platform. Nvidia had been "in talks" to acquire Hugging Face, an open-source AI platform that developers use to collaborate, test, and share tools. The deal talks commenced after Hugging Face received acquisition interest from another suitor.

Multiple news outlets have reported, citing sources familiar with the situation, that Hugging Face has been collaborating with a bank to assess potential investors' interest in the firm. If the deal goes through, Nvidia will possess one of the most popular sites for sharing and working with open-source AI models. That is why the chipmaker is getting even more involved in the ecosystem of software and models.

Nvidia has been quite busy in the last year, striking a number of deals, including a $20 billion licensing deal with artificial intelligence chip startup Groq. This was followed by blockbuster earnings on August 26, which caused shares to rise 4% in after-hours trading. According to Siddy Jobe, a fund manager at Eonopolis Exponential Technologies, it made sense for Nvidia to target a company like Hugging Face.

This is especially true in light of Nvidia's stated intention to treat closed and open-source models equally. According to what Jobe told a news outlet, Nvidia is primarily a platform-based community, and Hugging Face is a great fit for that. Foundational models are one tier of Nvidia's five-layer cake. Additionally, he pointed out that Nvidia's desire to be vertically integrated throughout the entire stack—from energy to foundational models and applications—is evident.

Cyberattack on Hugging Face

The developer of ChatGPT, OpenAI, has announced that two of its most sophisticated AI models compromised another AI firm after escaping a controlled test. According to OpenAI, the "unprecedented cyber incident" occurred on July 21st while the company was conducting an internal exercise to evaluate the cyber capabilities of its models.

The newly released GPT 5.6 Sol and an unreleased "even more capable" model were used to power an autonomous agent that managed to escape the test environment and make its way to the open internet. The company said that it gained access to Hugging Face servers by using stolen login credentials and discovering a previously undiscovered security hole.

According to Hugging Face, the malicious AI agent attempted to steal cloud credentials by independently carrying out about 17,000 distinct activities. It adapted its behaviour as it advanced through the assault, making decisions on its own rather than waiting for instructions after each step. This is a prime illustration of the autonomous behaviour of agentic AI. But the business found the intrusion in time to stop the hackers from accessing private client information or model weights.
