Oracle has slashed jobs across all markets, threatening to fire off as many as 30,000 workers worldwide. Nonetheless, news accounts indicate that thousands of jobs have already been cut in India. Roughly 12,000 people have lost their jobs in India, and more layoffs are on the horizon in the coming weeks.

According to media accounts, a diverse group of professionals, including architects, engineers, programme managers, and operations leaders, have been let go. Oracle senior management Michael Shepherd denied that performance was a factor in the layoffs. The impacted personnel were not let go because of personal faults, he added.

Oracle Employees Started Getting Emails

Many workers said they got emails first thing in the morning telling them they were no longer needed. Severance packages, which include notice pay and extra compensation, are issued to departing employees. According to the emails, the decision was made as part of a larger push to simplify processes. Because of this, some positions will eventually become obsolete. Oracle is cutting jobs in the cloud and AI departments while it increases spending on these areas. Executives have stated that fewer teams are able to produce more thanks to AI tools. Additionally, big engineering teams aren't needed as often.

According to Mike Sicilia, co-chief executive of Oracle, smaller engineering teams are able to produce more comprehensive solutions... with more speed because of the usage of AI coding tools inside the company. The corporation has reportedly obtained an extra $50 billion in debt to accommodate rising demand, and it intends to spend $50 billion on infrastructure this year. Along with OpenAI, SoftBank, and MGX, Oracle is a part of the $500 billion Stargate programme, which aims to expand data centre capacity to accommodate future AI workloads.

India Taken a Massive Hit Owing to Oracle Layoffs

The most recent round of layoffs appears to have had an excessive effect on India. Staff members informed a news source that most of the layoffs had taken place in India and that there will likely be more layoffs within the next month based on internal conversations. An impacted employee mentioned that other countries' regulatory and workforce protection laws could potentially harm Indian workers working abroad.

There are a number of components to an Indian severance package, including notice pay, gratuity (if applicable), leave encashment, and fifteen days' compensation for every year of service. Beyond that, there will be a two-month salary boost, but it is conditional on voluntary resignation.

Companies are reorganising their workforces in response to increasing usage of artificial intelligence, a trend that Oracle's layoffs represent. In addition, leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg of Meta and Jack Dorsey of Block have suggested that AI tools can allow fewer employees to complete more work.
