Sarvam, an Indian artificial intelligence (AI) startup, has inked a five-year deal with the ministry of defence to create and distribute AI apps for the military. This move is in line with India's plans to develop its own artificial intelligence capabilities in the interest of protecting the people and the country.

On October 26, Sarvam announced that the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Joint Organisations would be establishing a framework for artificial intelligence (AI) projects through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS). The precise initiatives intended to be undertaken under the agreement, as well as its financial specifics, have not been made public by the corporation.

How Sarvam will Transform India’s Defence Landscape?

In order to aid in military operations, training, and decision-making, Sarvam will create AI applications and offer technical assistance for their implementation. All three services will be covered by the projects, which will be coordinated by HQ IDS. Decision support, target acquisition, and data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter loop are the primary areas of interest for the proposed applications. Sovereign infrastructure will power the systems, and operational choices will still be overseen by humans, the corporation announced.

A shared technological stack consisting of foundational models, agentic AI infrastructure, and perceptual and geospatial technologies will also be available to the three services as a result of the arrangement. As a result, the forces may be able to build on capabilities established by other branches and share lessons learned from their own programmes. The task will be executed by Chanakya, the security and defence section of Sarvam. The Sarvam 105B foundation model, along with the rest of the company's AI technology stack, will be utilised.

Govt Promoting Vocal for Local

The government is attempting to lessen India's dependence on foreign defence technology, which is why this arrangement is essential. Building indigenous AI capabilities is becoming another area of concentration alongside attempts to develop and produce defence equipment domestically. Sarvam and HQ IDS will also investigate potential initiatives to integrate various aspects of India's military capabilities using a shared AI framework, the business announced.

The effort is framed by the firm as a component of its objective to enhance artificial intelligence capabilities in India to meet the needs of the Indian market. Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with the three Services on matters of national defence. Additionally, he assured HQ IDS that the corporation would fulfil its promise. Not much is known about its architecture, its implementation steps, or the involvement of any other technological partners at this time.
