TCS Rolls Out Employee Monitoring Tool Across Laptops Used by 6 Lakh Staff
TCS has launched out a Digital User Experience surveillance application on company given laptops used by close to 6 lakh employees sparking concerns about employee privacy, data collecting and workplace surveillance. The system can measure app usage and time spent on apps.
On all company-issued laptops, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has installed a Digital User Experience Monitoring program. The biggest IT services company in India is now discussing how to strike a balance between cybersecurity needs and employee monitoring as a result of the move. With this technology, TCS can see things like what apps employees use and how much time they spend on each.
According to reports, the implementation is being seen internally as a way to improve data security and obtain a better understanding of what employees are doing on corporate devices. Questions about the software vendor, the tool's capabilities, the type of employee data collected, and who in the organisation had access to the information remained unanswered by the corporation.
TCS’s Move Raises Lost of Questions
This rollout occurs as demand mounts on IT service providers to better protect their clients' private data and implement stringent cybersecurity measures. As per media reports, it was not possible to independently confirm the tool's monitoring capabilities. It is also not apparent if the data is aggregated for security and IT purposes, linked to specific employees, or available to company administrators.
According to media sources, employees are speculating due to a lack of official information about the implementation, even though monitoring technologies are frequently employed in the IT and BPM sectors. There may be serious operational and data management issues with tracking employee activity across a workforce of 600,000 or more, according to reports. Understanding the nature of the job being done is more important than looking at login hours when trying to measure employee productivity.
A lot of workers use VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) setups that are administered by the client, which makes things more complicated. Additional worries regarding client confidentiality and data protection duties may arise from any effort to spy on customer VDI activity.
Monitoring Employees Common Scenario in IT Sector
The report emphasised that the technology services business is not new to using personnel monitoring technologies. The employment of ProHance, a tool for workforce management that can monitor login times, application usage, website activity, and periods of inactivity on workplace laptops, brought Cognizant under attention last year. When asked about the tool's usage in evaluating employees' performance, Cognizant insisted it was not. To boost operational efficiency, nevertheless, it was only used on a handful of customer projects. As standards for cybersecurity, compliance, and productivity change, the most recent news indicates that IT companies are still looking at ways to gain a better view of their digital workspaces.
Additionally, the rollout is a result of TCS and cybersecurity firm Zscaler's expanding relationship. Using technologies developed by Zscaler Digital Experience (ZDX), TCS introduced TCS Workspace Experience Studio earlier this year. A combination of zero-trust security, workplace observability, and digital experience monitoring is what the platform offers, according to the company. In addition, it enables analytics powered by AI to assist businesses in enhancing the digital experiences of their employees.
