Vikram Solar Set to Launch Cell Production at 9 GW Tamil Nadu Facility in 2026

Vikram Solar will commission production at its 9 GW N-type TOPCon solar cell plant in Gangaikondan, Tamil Nadu, in December 2026. The factory is expected to be commissioned in phases and is intended to lessen India’s reliance on imported solar cells.

On October 23rd, Vikram Solar announced that production at its 9 GW N-type TOPCon solar cell factory in Gangaikondan, Tamil Nadu, is scheduled to begin in December 2026. Vikram Solar is a prominent manufacturer of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. According to the company's statement, the whole 9 GW capacity will be turned on in stages.

According to Vikram Solar's Chairman and Managing Director Gyanesh Chaudhary, the company and other Indian module manufacturers have relied on imported cells to fuel their operations. That is when Vikram Solar's Gangaikondan facility comes into play. The value, technology, and risk of a module are contained in its cells, and Chaudhary added that the firm will begin manufacturing them in Tamil Nadu in December.

Why Vikram Solar Focussing on Manufacturing Cell?

The cell used in the majority of Indian modules is still imported, despite the fact that India has achieved record-breaking module capacity. The business said that cells determine efficiency, dependability, and cost, and that they constitute the biggest component of a module's bill of materials. In Chaudhary's view, this is the first and foremost stage of the integration process, rather than the end. On Indian soil, the company's strategy extends from wafer to module.

Gangaikondan takes care of that dependency head-on; when it's running at full capacity, it will provide most of Vikram Solar's module production with high-efficiency TOPCon cells. For domestic content-required initiatives like India's utility-scale, rooftop, PM Surya Ghar, and PM-KUSUM, as well as for international clients looking to diversify their supply chains, this will make Indian modules (from cell to frame) possible.

Future Plans of Vikram Solar

In due future, the company plans to seek enrolment for cells produced at Gangaikondan on the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List-II. The cell plant is the second of three segments in Vikram Solar's integration roadmap at Gangaikondan. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu formally inaugurated the first 6 GW module facility in August 2026.

Once finished, Gangaikondan will join the small number of Indian plants that produce ingots, wafers, cells, and modules all at once. More than 2,000 jobs, both direct and indirect, will be available on campus. Construction is underway on the plant on the almost 200-acre integrated campus of the company's wholly owned subsidiary, VSL Green Power Pvt Ltd. Factory's co-location reduces logistics costs, tightens quality control, and shortens supply cycles. An industry leader in efficient photovoltaic (PV) module production, Vikram Solar Limited is based in India but has a global footprint in 39 countries. It is a major player in the Indian PV module market and has its headquarters in Kolkata, West Bengal.
