Negotiations between JSW Group of India and Volkswagen AG are progressing well. The German automaker is looking for a strategic investor to help it expand into the third-largest auto market in the world. It is possible that a deal might be finalised in the coming weeks as the two parties continue to work toward it.

In this plan, JSW would put money into Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd., and the group headed by Sajjan Jindal would probably end up with the majority share. The deal valuation and the amount of capital that JSW and Volkswagen would commit are two of the many outstanding issues that have persisted despite recent meetings between top officials from both companies.

Why Volkswagen Seeking for Partner in India?

After more than 20 years in the Indian market, the German manufacturer is still struggling to achieve scale. With this joint venture, Volkswagen's years-long pursuit may finally come to a close. Additionally, JSW, a corporation specialising in steel-to-electric vehicle conversions, would gain access to Volkswagen's vehicle platforms as a result of the acquisition. In addition, it will be a stepping stone to more international collaboration with a reputable European automaker.

According to an email from a Volkswagen representative, the automaker is always looking into different ways to execute its plan in India. Skoda Auto's global growth plans include India as a key market, according to the spokesperson, who declined to comment on any negotiations with JSW. Additionally, Volkswagen reduced its planned investment in a new electric vehicle platform for India from $1 billion to approximately $700 million.

Earlier reports indicated that Volkswagen and Indian businesses were in talks to form a partnership. Reports surfaced in 2024 suggesting that Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW Group were considering investments in Volkswagen's India business as the German carmaker investigated potential strategies for local expansion.

Volkswagen Underperforming in India

As it struggles to recover internationally, Volkswagen has grown more amenable to selling off its India subsidiary. The Indian subsidiary reported a profit increase for the fiscal year ending March 31. However, the parent company in Europe is becoming increasingly hesitant to invest in the company without a local partner to help spread the risk. The decision to reduce spending in India is indicative of a broader effort by Volkswagen to cut costs across the company's worldwide operations.

Despite having set a goal of 5% market share by the end of the decade, the Volkswagen Group's Skoda, VW, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, and Lamborghini brands only manage 2.5% of India's passenger vehicle market. The Skoda brand has introduced models tailored to the Indian market, like the Kylaq small SUV, but the company still has a small percentage of the market.
