Workers Protest Samsung Plant Over Job Suspensions, Families Join Demonstrations
New demonstrations have broken out as a result of a long-running disagreement about employment suspensions at Samsung India. On March 22, more than 27 employees and their families were arrested in Chennai. The workers' goal was to reach the State Secretariat via Sriperumbudur.
In the Kancheepuram area, where the company's manufacturing facility is located, 27 employees were fired last year; the current workforce is demanding their reinstatement. At the rally's beginning, police blocked the demonstrators after denying them permission to hold the event. As soon as workers tried to move on despite limits, tensions began to rise. The police, however, stepped in after a short altercation and took the bunch into custody. In the end, everyone who was arrested was let go that very day.
Responding to Startuptalky, the company stated, "Our global code of conduct stipulates that the company has a zero tolerance policy for any type of behavior that goes against maintaining a professional and respectful workplace environment. The employees in question violated this company policy and have been suspended temporarily, and will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action following a formal enquiry."
What Happened in 2025 at Samsung India’s Plant?
A conflict that has been going on for months has reached a new peak with the protest. The dispute started in 2025 when over 800 employees went on strike for union recognition, increased salaries, and bonuses. Following the agitation, the corporation suspended 27 employees on the grounds that they were the ones responsible for it. But the employees have always insisted on having their suspensions lifted, claiming that they were unfair.
After CV Ganesan, the Labour Welfare Minister of Tamil Nadu, intervened, the matter seemed to be on the verge of being resolved. Workers claimed he promised to reinstate the suspended staff. Protests were postponed last month due to that reason. So far, that resolution has not come to fulfilment.
Workers resumed their agitation as no progress was made on reinstatement. To increase the pressure on the firm and the state, they enlisted the help of family members this time. Sunguvarchatram is home to over a thousand Samsung employees and serves as an important centre for the production of consumer electronics in India.
Samsung India’s Plant on Labour Unions’ Radar
The last twelve months have seen a dramatic increase in union activity at Samsung India's facility. A union connected with CITU has historically staged rallies, including sit-ins and strike notifications, and has voiced concerns about wage agreements and purported discriminatory practices. Local media outlets have reported that Samsung has previously refuted these claims. The most recent strike highlights the increasing tension between management and employees.
All this is happening at a time when multinational corporations are facing demands to strike a balance between operational efficiency and labour demands. This incident makes state officials wonder about the results of mediation. Tensions on the ground have persisted despite earlier promises to end the disagreement. Keeping production going while managing labour unrest at a critical site is a more pressing concern for Samsung. On the other hand, the workers' demand has not budged. It is possible that additional demonstrations or strikes may occur in the weeks to come as a result of the ongoing issue.
