The Breakeven Is About Ten Minutes a Day
Here is the calculation I would run before paying for Starter rather than Base.
Starter costs ₹3,823 a year and the main thing it adds over Base, for a solo operator, is Gemini in Gmail: drafting replies, summarising long threads, and cleaning up an inbox. Say you work 250 days a year. If Gemini saves you ten minutes a day on email, that is about 42 hours recovered, and ₹3,823 across 42 hours works out to roughly ₹92 an hour of your own time.
If you bill anything above ₹92 an hour, and you genuinely spend time wrestling with email, Starter pays for itself several times over. If you send six emails a week, it does not, and Base is the better buy. That is the whole decision, and it turns on how much of your week is admin rather than on any feature list.

When the Free Option Is the Right Answer
Free mailbox plans exist, and Zoho's offers one domain, five users and 5 GB of mail each, so you can put your own address on every invoice you send.
The limits are real though. IMAP, POP and ActiveSync are not included, so you are using Zoho's web and mobile apps rather than Outlook or Apple Mail. Zoho says the free plan is available only in select data centres. And 5 GB fills up faster than you expect once clients start sending design files and scanned contracts, at which point you are migrating mail under time pressure, which is the worst moment to do it. Take the free plan if you are testing whether the business is real. Pay once it is.
What the Google Premium Buys a Solo Operator
I pay for Workspace rather than running free, and the reason has very little to do with features.
It is that almost every client I send a document to already has a Google account. Sharing a Doc with comment access takes one click and they are in, with no sign-up prompt and no file sitting in an inbox getting out of sync. The same is true of Meet links, which clients join without installing anything or creating an account. For a freelancer, friction in those two moments costs you more than ₹3,823 a year, because it lands on the client rather than on you, and the client is the one deciding whether working with you is easy. Storage headroom matters too. Base gives 20 GB against Zoho free's 5 GB, and a year of client files, invoices and scanned agreements eats 5 GB quickly. Over a few years, the shared Docs, the Meet links that just work and one identity across Gmail, Drive and Calendar are why I see Workspace as the higher-return choice once clients are paying you.
