On September 10th, tech titan Google unveiled five new sustainability and clean-energy projects in India. In order to back national climate goals and expedite the transition to sustainable energy, the company is investing in infrastructure and using artificial intelligence (AI).

A 150 MW utility solar agreement in Rajasthan, a distributed rooftop solar intelligence system that will cover 300 million buildings. Further, the firm has introduced an initiative to reduce methane and water use with the help of Mitti Labs. This initiative will benefit tens of thousands of smallholder farmers, and new research tracks at the Google Center for Climate Technology are all part of the announcements.

How Google Planned to Execute these Initiatives?

A long time ago, Google began using AI and images to simplify and speed up the uptake of rooftop solar panels. Solar API, which is a component of Earth AI, can now provide insights for over 300 million rooftops in India and over 1.2 billion structures worldwide, according to the business. In a blog post, Vrushali Gaud, Google's Director of Climate Operations, said that these initiatives demonstrate how digital innovation and environmental stewardship work together to make a real and long-lasting difference for India.

These initiatives range from using geospatial AI to assist local solar installers in increasing rooftop adoption to working with farmers to implement climate-smart water practices and adding clean power to the national grid. The business has inked a long-term deal with ReNew Power to build a 150 MW solar power plant in Rajasthan as part of the green energy initiative. Google will be entitled to the environmental benefits linked to the project's clean electricity under the terms of the agreement. The company will also use it to reduce emissions from power use all throughout its supply chain.

Google & Mitti Labs Joining Hands to Help Farmers

Through its partnership with Mitti Labs, the firm is assisting Telangana's small-scale rice farmers in becoming more environmentally conscious. Using a combination of on-the-ground field networks and satellite monitoring provided by NASA, the project intends to reduce emissions of roughly three million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂) during a 20-year period.

This is comparable to one million metric tonnes over a 100-year period. Gaud elaborated by saying that if Google buys these credits to offset emissions, it will either offset them with emissions that have a shorter half-life in its own footprint or replace them with carbon removals after their effect on the atmosphere wears off, much like it does with its other purchases of superpollutants.

As part of its first-ever Google DeepMind Accelerator: AI for the Planet, Google is also investing in four Indian startups. In contrast to Terrastack and Varaha Climate's emphasis on carbon credits, regenerative farming, and land intelligence. Further, Climitra Carbon and Farmers for Forests employ Geo-AI, drones, and satellite models to do agroforestry, restore biodiversity, and turn invasive biomass into biochar.
