Uber Set to Introduce High-End Robotaxi Service in Houston in 2027
In the coming year, Uber will launch a premium robotaxi service in collaboration with electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid and autonomous vehicle startup Nuro. The companies' robotaxi service was first introduced in the San Francisco Bay Area, and this will be their second in the US market.
Houston is expected to launch the service in mid-2027 over the Uber network solely, according to the corporations. In the future, there are ambitions to broaden the service to cover more markets. A 50,000-square-foot charging station and depot facility has also been reserved for Uber in Houston. This facility will function as the focal point of its autonomous robotaxi programme.
How Uber’s Houston Facility will Assist Initiative?
A fleet of Nuro-powered Lucid Gravity robotaxis will be able to dock at the Houston facility. It will facilitate the scalable management of routine operations such as charging, repairs, maintenance, and cleaning for Uber and its fleet partners. According to Sarfraz Maredia, Uber's Global Head of Autonomous Mobility & Delivery, the launch in Houston is a major milestone for the company's collaboration with Lucid and Nuro.
This collaboration is essential as Uber expands autonomous mobility to a broader number of passengers worldwide. He elaborated that the move allowed the company to leverage its infrastructure, fleet operations knowledge, and size in conjunction with state-of-the-art vehicle and autonomy technologies to create a service capable of expanding into dozens of new markets in the coming years. A media report stated that the announcement by the ride-hailing giant means that Uber will compete in both the San Francisco and Houston markets with Waymo, an autonomous car firm owned by Alphabet.
San Francisco has been the site of months of testing for Nuro's self-driving Lucid Gravity SUVs. There has been improvement in that area, but the cars still can't drive themselves. In a recent development, Nuro was granted permission by the California Department of Motor Vehicles to eliminate the safety driver from its taxi fleet.

Uber-Nuro- Lucid Partnership
Along with safety drivers, the 100-vehicle autonomous fleet from Uber and Nuro is also testing on Houston's public roadways. In addition, before releasing the robotaxis to the general public, Nuro is evaluating its autonomous driving system over simulated and closed courses.
As Lucid begins manufacturing the first production versions of the robotaxis at its Arizona factory, the test fleet is anticipated to grow in the upcoming weeks. Approximately $500 million has been invested directly by Uber into Lucid and Nuro. There will be a minimum purchase of 35,000 Lucid vehicles prepared for robotaxis, as promised.
