Draped in Stories, Not Trends: How Shivani Nirupam Is Weaving Mumbai’s Chaos into Conscious Luxury
In a world chasing trends, Shivani Nirupam is creating something timeless. Through Label Shivani Nirupam, she transforms Mumbai’s energy into garments that celebrate storytelling, sustainability, and thoughtful luxury.
The Indian fashion industry is rapidly evolving, driven by the rise of D2C brands, shifting consumer preferences, and increasing demand for sustainable and conscious fashion. Valued at over $100 billion, the industry is projected to reach nearly $300 billion by 2030, fueled by a young, digitally native consumer base that prioritises affordable luxury, cultural relevance, and ethical production. At the same time, the global push toward slow fashion and responsible consumption is reshaping how brands design, produce, and position themselves.
In this dynamic landscape, a new wave of women-led fashion labels is redefining storytelling, craftsmanship, and identity. As part of our International Women’s Day series, we speak with Shivani Nirupam, Founder of Label Shivani Nirupam, a brand that blends Mumbai’s cultural energy with conscious design philosophies to create fashion that is both emotionally resonant and sustainably crafted.
From Instinct to Identity: The Birth of Label Shivani Nirupam
StartupTalky: Every successful label begins with a defining moment of courage. Could you share the specific "spark" or struggle that convinced you to transition from a dreamer to the founder of Label Shivani Nirupam, and how you navigated the initial challenges of establishing a brand in India’s competitive D2C landscape?
Shivani Nirupam: Every successful label springs from a moment of raw courage, and for me, it was trusting an inexplicable pull toward design, despite growing up in a family of journalists and politicians where fashion was absent from the conversation. This quiet calling, not a calculated certainty but a persistent instinct, propelled me from dreamer to founder of Label Shivani Nirupam in India's cutthroat D2C landscape.
This feeling was not something I planned, it was something I felt deeply. It helped me to start my own label, Label Shivani Nirupam in a very competitive market in India. Being true to myself. My values have really helped us to stand out. The fashion world is always. Things can get really crazy. Instead of getting stressed we use that energy to keep learning and growing. We make a sincere effort to manufacture clothing in a waste-free approach. We take our time to ensure that everything is flawlessly. We are transparent with both our customers and ourselves. That helps us to keep moving forward one step at a time with Label Shivani Nirupam.
Local Soul, Global Appeal: Designing for the Modern Woman
StartupTalky: Your collections, such as Bambai Ki Baarish and Phool Bazaar, are deeply evocative of Mumbai’s unique energy. In an industry often dominated by global trends, how do you strategically balance these local "anecdotes" with a contemporary aesthetic that resonates with a global, modern woman?
Shivani Nirupam: Mumbai is less a city and more a living concept of energy, an entity. The monsoons, the frenzied flower markets are not just the visual references but the emotional references that we try to translate into every garment. The local and global references are never overt because we are not attempting to create clothes that are ‘Indian’ in a literal sense but ‘feel’ Indian. That is joy, that is overload for the senses, that is the experience of a city fully alive. These emotions resonate globally despite their local context.
We also forgo literal "Indian" motifs, distilling instead that intoxicating sensory rush, pure joy, chaotic aliveness, that a thriving metropolis breathes, resonating deeply with the global modern woman. Inspiration ignites intuitively: what I witness, I manifest. Amid fashion's whirlwind, customer desires and market rhythms guide Label Shivani Nirupam, harmonising local heartbeat with universal elegance.
Conscious Extravaganza: Balancing Luxury with Sustainability
StartupTalky: You’ve often spoken about "conscious extravaganza" and "slow fashion" as core pillars of your brand. As a leader, how do you reconcile the inherent tension between the "extravagant" visual appeal your customers love and the "slow," sustainable production methods required to remain an ethical, forward-thinking brand in 2026?
Shivani Nirupam: Conscious extravaganza" powers Label Shivani Nirupam via made-to-order mastery, we create only what customers crave or you can say we work more on consumer demands, erasing waste and overproduction while delivering meaningful luxury on demand. This forges a versatile brand where extravaganza means heirloom pieces of timeless value: endlessly restylable, worn across countless life moments not discarded after one season.
True luxury embraces responsible consumption, cherished keepsakes women treasure forever. In the ethical behavior period of 2026, we integrate luxurious attractiveness with sustainable craftsmanship, highlighting long-lasting, versatile designs that showcase how luxuriousness and conscience can thrive successfully.
Textiles as Storytelling: Preserving Heritage Through Design
StartupTalky: Innovation in fashion is often reduced to technology, but for Label Shivani Nirupam, it lies in storytelling through textiles. How do you approach the research and development of your prints to ensure they aren't just visually striking, but also serve as a medium for preserving Indian heritage in a modern wardrobe?
Shivani Nirupam: The print we make has been created with the goal of going through time. Emotional factors come first, and then physical form. Through interpretation rather than exact recombination these evergreen flowers and designs obtained from the open sky convey memory and legacy. We communicate with India's incredible variety of visual language by transforming its essence, its attraction to nature, color, and pattern into something that seamlessly fits into a contemporary wardrobe. The true craft has been discovered in that evolution from conventional wisdom to the present.
Affordable Luxury for a New Generation
StartupTalky: With the significant shift in Indian consumer behaviour toward "Affordable Premium" and value-driven luxury, how has your brand’s positioning evolved to meet the demands of a discerning, under-30 demographic that prioritises comfort and cultural relevance over traditional status symbols?
Shivani Nirupam: Our market is ideal for Label Shivani Nirupam since it is young, vibrant, and full of opportunities. We manufacture for powerful ladies who favor modest extravagant lifestyles and thoughtful luxury for life as usual. Mumbai, a city known for its constant contemporary art, in which we were born. Value-driven luxury is that has always been our fundamental value, not a turnaround.
Each piece communicates directly to an individual's soul and is characterized by simplicity, cultural relevance, and contemporary style. This sensibility assures that our work keeps being lively, innovative, and emotionally meaningful for the younger buyer who values real experience above logos.
Embracing the Messy Middle: Advice for Women Entrepreneurs
StartupTalky: This International Women’s Day, your journey stands as a testament to the idea that "dreams can turn into reality." Looking back at your own struggles, what is the one piece of "unconventional" business advice you would give to young women entrepreneurs who are currently facing the "messy middle" of their startup journey?
Shivani Nirupam: We remain in the “messy middle” in my opinion, and the sooner that you understand it, the more comfortable and empowered you will be. The industry is ever changing, along with the unpredictability, the consumer preferences become diverse and change constantly. There's no doubt that everything will always be chaotic.
So, there is no appropriate time to gear up, consistency and experiments never go out of trend. Most of the time, unpredictability doesn't mean that you are operating inappropriately, instead, it suggests that you are performing honestly. The successful women founders are those who continued rather than those who minimized experiencing hardship. Follow your initial instincts, more than a plan of action that will help you grow faster because your inner voice will carry you further than perfect plans ever can.
The Road Ahead: Craft, Conscious Growth, and Legacy
StartupTalky: As the Indian fashion industry moves toward a projected $300 billion opportunity by 2030, where do you see Label Shivani Nirupam in this evolving ecosystem, and what specific innovations in craft infrastructure or conscious expansion will define the next chapter of your brand’s legacy?
Shivani Nirupam: In all honesty, I would appreciate even just a small portion of that $300 billion vision, not out of modesty but out of sincerity. The next chapter of Label Shivani Nirupam will focus on craftsmanship superiority, method authenticity, and relationships with our artisans and wearers rather than exploring frontiers that are unfamiliar. It will be an honorable legacy if, by 2030, we get praise for our timeless designs that are both thoroughly contemporary and uniquely Indian.
Refined facilities such as communities that support responsible artisans, zero-waste scalability, and customizable antiques, is where creativity flourishes. Growing without losing spirit, placing enduring value above disappearing quantity,is what conscious expansion requires.
