India's states collected a gross domestic GST of Rs 1,44,695 crore in July 2026, up 10.1% from Rs 1,31,439 crore in July 2025. This is a faster pace of growth than June, when the year-on-year rise was 6.5%, suggesting business activity picked up further during the month.

Here is a simple breakdown of how each state performed, based on provisional data released by the CBIC.

Overall GST Collection Trend

The total GST collection figure for July 2026 covers only domestic transactions. It does not include GST collected on imports, and it is measured before refunds are paid out. This is the standard way state-wise collection numbers are reported each month.

Metric July 2025 July 2026 Growth
Gross Domestic GST Rs 1,31,439 cr Rs 1,44,695 cr 10.1%

Maharashtra Leads State-Wise GST Collection

Maharashtra remained the top contributor by a wide margin, collecting Rs 32,210 crore in July 2026, more than double the second-placed state. Karnataka and Gujarat followed, both crossing the Rs 12,000 crore mark. Together, these three states made up close to 41% of the total domestic GST collected across the country.

Top 10 States by GST Collection

Rank State July 2026 (Rs cr) Growth
1 Maharashtra 32,210 13%
2 Karnataka 13,854 12%
3 Gujarat 12,923 19%
4 Haryana 11,892 25%
5 Tamil Nadu 10,414 -1%
6 Uttar Pradesh 9,651 15%
7 Delhi 6,460 8%
8 Telangana 5,819 19%
9 West Bengal 5,564 2%
10 Odisha 4,339 5%

These ten states together accounted for a large share of the country's total GST collection, in line with where most of India's industrial and commercial activity is based.

Haryana Shows Strongest Growth Among Large States

Among the bigger states, Haryana recorded the fastest growth at 25%, rising from Rs 9,502 crore to Rs 11,892 crore. Gujarat and Telangana were close behind, both up 19%, while Uttar Pradesh grew 15%. Smaller states and union territories such as Lakshadweep (up 259% on a tiny base), Ladakh (up 35%) and Other Territory (up 50%) posted the sharpest percentage gains, though their actual collection amounts remain small.

States That Saw a Decline in Collection

Not every state saw growth this July. A few states collected less GST than they did a year ago.

State July 2025 (Rs cr) July 2026 (Rs cr) Growth
Sikkim 401 164 -59%
Himachal Pradesh 941 736 -22%
Uttarakhand 1,762 1,448 -18%
Puducherry 244 203 -17%
Madhya Pradesh 3,639 3,291 -10%
Mizoram 31 28 -7%
Andhra Pradesh 3,532 3,366 -5%
Tamil Nadu 10,536 10,414 -1%

Sikkim recorded the steepest fall, down 59%, followed by Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, all hill states with small collection bases. It is worth noting that a modest drop in rupee terms can look like a large percentage fall when the base is small. Among bigger states, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh saw mild declines, and Madhya Pradesh fell for a second straight month, which is a point worth watching ahead.

Why Some States Grow Faster Than Others

State-wise GST collection largely reflects local economic activity, consumption patterns and the presence of manufacturing or trading hubs. States like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat have large industrial and services bases, which keep their collection numbers high. Haryana's strong growth this month lines up with its base of manufacturing and corporate offices around the Delhi NCR belt. On the other hand, smaller and hill states often have lower collections in absolute terms, though their growth rates can swing sharply due to the smaller base.

It is also worth remembering that GST collected in a state is not the same as GST settled to that state. A separate settlement process divides up the IGST collected on inter-state trade and gives states their fair share based on consumption. That is a different number from the collection figures shown here.

What This Data Tells Us

The 10.1% overall growth in July 2026 is an improvement over June's 6.5%, suggesting steady and even strengthening economic activity across India. Large states continue to dominate collection numbers, while a mix of hill states and a couple of large states showed weaker performance this month. The government will likely watch states with declining collections, such as Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, more closely in the months ahead.

For businesses and policy watchers, these monthly figures offer an early signal of consumption trends, well before other economic indicators are released.
