Layoff Fears Grow as Meta Workers Protest Increased Surveillance Measures
Meta workers are protesting the company's new monitoring software that aims to teach AI by posting leaflets around the headquarters in the United States. This change occurred only days before the corporation was scheduled to start laying off 10% of its employees on May 20.
The Model Capability Initiative is a tool that occasionally captures screenshots of work-related programs and records mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes. Andrew Bosworth, Meta's chief technologist, has already informed employees that the data gathering is a component of the "Agent Transformation Accelerator" initiative. Consequently, a vision is presented in which AI agents are responsible for the majority of the work, while humans are relegated to providing guidance, reviewing, and assisting in the improvement of the agents.
Meta Strongly Backed the Tracking Software
A prior statement the business had released on the mouse-tracking technology was referenced by Andy Stone, a representative for Meta, when speaking to a news agency. According to the statement, the company needs real-life examples of people using computers to train its agents to do common jobs. Training these models involves actions such as clicking buttons, moving the mouse, and browsing through dropdown menus.
Both the petition and the pamphlets refer to the U.S. National Labour Relations Act, which states that employees are legally safeguarded when they opt to form unions to enhance their working circumstances. Meta workers in the United Kingdom have begun organising a unionisation push through the Communication Workers Union's United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW) chapter. Using the URL "LeanIn.uk", a reference to the best-selling book by former COO Sheryl Sandberg, which encourages women to strive for equality in the workplace, the employees created a website to recruit members.
