Meta Adds Privacy Safeguard to Ray-Ban AI Glasses, Camera Shuts off if Light is Tampered

Meta has added a new privacy feature to its Ray-Ban AI smart glasses that will instantly turn off the camera if the gadget senses interference with the LED privacy indicator. The upgrade is designed to prevent anyone from taking photos and videos secretly.

Meta has been under fire for months due to allegations that the company spied on consumers using Ray-Ban smart glasses. One feature of Meta's Ray-Ban AI glasses is a capture LED, which is a white light that blinks to indicate when the device is taking a picture for the accompanying phone's gallery app. It flashes briefly when taking a picture, and it flashes continually while recording video. The wearer can't turn off the capture LED.

There have been multiple cases of individuals tampering with the privacy light indicators on Ray-Ban specs, allowing them to secretly record private images and videos of others without their knowledge or approval. A few have made it into the hands of people who want to ruin the reputations of former partners by sharing private footage on social media.

Meta Rectifies Loophole and Enhances Security

The firm, which is now controlled by Mark Zuckerberg, has started updating all of Ray-Ban's smart glasses with a privacy security patch. It will prevent the camera from turning on if it detects that the device's camera recorder indicator has been triggered. It can't be turned on until an authorised service fixes the problem and the smart glasses' real indicator part is back in place.

According to Meta, the company has noticed that some individuals have gone to extreme lengths, going beyond just using tape, in their attempts to alter or destroy the capture LED. Updating the glasses to shut the camera if they detect physical tampering or destruction of the LED is the next step in the brand's ongoing effort to identify tampering. Meta is pleased to be at the forefront of innovation in the business since no other camera type has achieved this. Additionally, the business has declared its intention to sue smart glass service centres and stores that aid in manipulating the camera's privacy light.

Meta Ray-Ban Voice Recording issue

There was earlier word that Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses could capture audio and video from their environment even when they weren't worn or were set on a table. Meta responded to user concerns about privacy by changing its user policy and making public the fact that it will keep audio samples for future evaluation. Whenever the user inadvertently activates Meta AI on the device, these audio samples are stored. On occasion, data samples will be sent to Meta's cloud server, while on other occasions, they will be retained on the device itself.

Meta not only uses machine learning to fine-tune its AI response, but it also sends data samples to human reviewers contracted by a third party to help refine its own AI offerings. To prevent the leakage of sensitive information, many on social media have urged consumers to not buy these smart glasses. Some even went up against famous people endorsing Meta's Ray-Ban smart eyewear.
