Thane: Rat Found in Blinkit Ice Cream Freezer Amid Growing Food Safety Concerns
Concerns over fresh food safety have been raised after a rat was allegedly discovered inside an ice cream freezer at a Blinkit store in Thane, prompting calls for regulatory action. The incident follows inspections by the Maharashtra FDA that had identified hygienic issues at many Qcomm stores.
Customers are putting their faith in quick-commerce platforms to keep goods fresh and safe as they become more popular for all kinds of purchases, from groceries to ice cream. But new concerns have been raised regarding the enforcement of such rules following an incident at a Blinkit store in the Thane area of Maharashtra.
According to reports, a rat was seen darting around an ice cream freezer at a Blinkit store in the Godrej Hill neighbourhood of Thane, Kalyan. The result was a rise in voices demanding that the government do something about food safety.
How Rat Race at Blinkit Came into Lime-Light?
While a group of children were shopping for ice cream at the store, the incident reportedly came to light. As they went looking through the packaged goods in the freezer, they were startled to see a rat racing around in the space, right next to the food. Young people, alert to the possible danger to their health, filmed the event on their phones. Since then, the clip has infuriated locals, who have called on the FDA to take strong action against the store. Food safety regulators in Maharashtra have previously been investigating establishments associated with quick-commerce platforms before this event.
In the past, fourteen businesses linked to Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart had their licences revoked by the Maharashtra FDA after an inspection campaign that covered the whole state. A number of food safety and hygiene issues were discovered during inspections of 86 firms that deal with the online storage, sale, and delivery of food. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) temporarily halted operations at one plant and issued 60 improvement notices. Five of the fourteen licences that were suspended belonged to establishments associated with Blinkit, five to Zepto, and two to Instamart.
FDA and FSSAI Putting Strict Scanner on Blinkit
A Blinkit-affiliated business in the Ghatkopar neighbourhood of Mumbai was one of the places that the FDA investigated. Issues with temperature control for frozen products, unprotected lighting fixtures in an unpacked-food storage area, inadequate drainage and waste-disposal procedures, and poor housekeeping standards were discovered during the inspection. The institution was found to be non-compliant after receiving a score of 34 out of 74, which is 46%. The facility was also found to have a cockroach infestation, according to the officials. The inspection revealed damaged ceilings and flooring as well as improper segregation of food items during storage.
After discovering many infractions, inspectors suspended the establishment's FSSAI licence at another Blinkit-linked site in Malad West. The chiller room was found to be functioning at 6 degrees Celsius, which officials deemed to be above the permissible temperature. Additionally, forty food handlers' medical examination records could not be produced by the institution. Several employees were allegedly discovered without the most fundamental safety equipment, including protective gloves, aprons, and helmets.
